For some wonderful reason my parents decided to invite me to be part of the birth when it finally happened. Grandma Stubbs, who lived nearby, was all set to watch over the little ones and my parents’ friend Debbie and I were to be included in the hospital business. I was extremely happy about this plan, you guys. Anything to make me feel like one of the adults, you know?
One might think.
“It’s a girl!!!” Dad said shakily.
Then I got a glimpse of the gross umbilical cord and turned back to face front.
Sisters are Cute.
Umbilical Cords are Grody.
Happy Birthday Gen!!

What a beautiful memory! Outside of the gore that comes immediately following childbirth, I’ve always wanted to be a midwife. 🙂 Lots of love and happy thoughts for your baby sister’s birthday!

Thank you so much!

Oh man, Marie. You just made me cry so hard. This is a beautiful story. Happy Birthday, Wrex.
Green Goose says
LOL No crying, J. But thank you. And her birth story could be so much longer, you know. You Derby Dolls take care of each other out there. Good luck with your castlessness! xoxo from OK.

What a precious story! You are so gifted! Being from the OKC area I could picture just where you were that January night 29 years ago. Happy Birthday to your beautiful sister.
Oh, and I’m the oldest of 5 as well! 3 girls and 2 boys! 🙂
Green Goose says
Thanks Sonya! Any chance you remember the Italian restaurant called Tony’s Via Roma? Mom & Dad almost named her Toni because she was born right there across form it. LOL So fun. How cool that we have the same brood! : )

Nice story, Marie. I am flattered and honored that you would call me a “midwife”, but aspiring I was. Actually, I was a mere 17 years old in this story and a senior in high school. What you left out was the fact that I proceeded to faint in the hospital! Then Grandpa Stubbs took us out for breakfast. Alison was so amazing! She was one of my first role models for motherhood. I love that you have this fond memory of your sister’s birth. : ) Love you all!

That’s so lovely. One of the joys of being the eldest in the family is that you get to share in the arrival of other siblings (although not always as intimately as you did). I still remember visiting my newborn youngest sister in the hospital when I was 14 – she soon became “Mine” as I would take her everywhere with me (even to school once – but that’s another story).
Green Goose says
That is wonderful Heather! I’d like to hear that story sometime : )
Green Goose says
LOL I remember that now!! The fainting, the breakfast, the whole next day. Oh my goodness. It rushed back to me when I read your note. Thank you Debbie. Mom is definitely my role model too, in so many ways now. I can’t believe Gen is all grown up.

Great big tears in my eyes. This is such a beautiful tribute to your sister and to your parents. What an experience to have had!
Green Goose says
Aww thank you! My family is deserving of many, many tributes. xoxo

Amazingly touching as always! I want you to be my sister.
Green Goose says
Melissa, thank you. xoxo We can be sister friends!! But then you run the risk of me writing embarrassing things now and then. LOL

it is always so wonderful for me to hear about the wonderful relationships that others have with their sisters. Mine is not that wonderful, but perhaps, it is mending. It will probably never be all that, but she is still available in my life. things could be worse.
You sister is beautiful (as are you!). Enjoy your life with her in it!
Green Goose says
Thank you Nadya! I feel very blessed by all of my siblings and in-laws. xoxo Relationships certainly evolve over time, for better and worse, so I wish you all the mending you crave. I’ll make sure Gen hears about your birthday wish!

I love this story! As a self-proclaimed birth junkie, I have read a lot of birth stories in my time. This is one of the best! Oh, and- in case you aren’t subscribed to the comment thread on my blog post from this morning: I responded to your comment there. Xoxoxo.

That’s such a sweet and wonderful story! I don’t have any sisters, and I always used to wish I had. I have two younger brothers that I share wonderful relationships with now; though not so while we were growing up.
Blessings to you both!
